The Umbrella
It was one of those sudden downpours that turned the city into chaos. People rushed for cover, taxis filled instantly, and streets glistened with reflections of neon lights. Emma stood helpless, holding a folder of important documents above her head, already soaked.
Then, out of nowhere, a large umbrella appeared over her. She looked up to see a man smiling warmly. “You’ll ruin those papers,” he said.
They walked together under the umbrella, strangers but oddly comfortable. His name was Adrian, a graphic designer who hated rain but loved helping people. She laughed, telling him about her disastrous day. Somehow, under that umbrella, the storm didn’t feel so heavy anymore.
When they reached her office building, Emma hesitated. She wanted to thank him properly, but words felt clumsy. Before she could speak, Adrian pressed the umbrella into her hands.
“Keep it,” he said. “Maybe I’ll see it again someday.”
The next morning, Emma returned to the café he had mentioned in passing. Sure enough, he was there, reading by the window. She held up the umbrella and grinned. “Thought you might need this back.”
His smile widened. “Or maybe I just needed to see you again.”
The rain had brought them together, but the umbrella was only the beginning.
