King Bael
King Bael is the first demon listed in the Ars Goetia, and he is regarded as one of its most powerful rulers. As a high-ranking king of Hell, Bael commands 66 legions of demons and is known for his ability to make people invisible. He is often depicted with a strange appearance—having the heads of a man, a cat, and a toad, all speaking simultaneously, and sometimes riding a spider.
Bael’s main power is invisibility, but this isn’t limited to mere physical concealment. He is said to grant stealth in both action and thought, making him a favorite among those seeking to avoid detection—whether in battle, espionage, or magical undertakings. His invisibility can also extend to spiritual and mental planes, helping practitioners move unseen in various realms or remain unnoticed by spiritual entities.
Aside from stealth, Bael possesses significant influence over the physical and spiritual realms. As a king, he is considered a master strategist and commander, often called upon for warfare, conquest, and achieving dominance. In magical tradition, Bael is associated with air and fire elements, which further reflects his swift, consuming, and elusive nature.
Historically, Bael (or Baal) has connections to ancient deities, especially from Canaanite and Phoenician pantheons, where he was worshipped as a powerful storm and fertility god. Over time, his image was demonized and incorporated into Christian demonology.
Despite being a fearsome figure, Bael is not purely malevolent. Like many entities in the Goetia, his actions are guided by the intent of the summoner. Those who approach with respect and precision in ritual can gain powerful allies in him—gaining not just invisibility, but influence, cunning, and authority in their dealings.
