The Kodaikanal Cyanide Case
In the scenic hill town of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, a case emerged in the late 1990s that stunned locals and investigators alike. Known today as the Kodaikanal Cyanide Case, it revolves around the mysterious deaths of several young women, most of whom were students or newly employed, found dead under bizarrely similar circumstances—seemingly natural deaths later linked by a chilling pattern.
The key suspect was a man named Mohan Kumar, also referred to in the media as “Cyanide Mohan.” A former teacher turned serial predator, he allegedly posed as a prospective husband to lure young women under the pretext of marriage. Once trust was established, he would convince them to elope with him, only to poison them using cyanide-laced capsules disguised as contraceptives. He would then flee with their jewelry and valuables.
What made the case particularly baffling was the sophistication with which the murders were carried out. Most of the deaths were initially classified as suicides due to the absence of physical trauma and the victims’ history of running away. It took years before police linked the deaths across different states, including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, revealing a well-planned murder pattern.
Although Mohan Kumar was eventually arrested in 2009 and convicted in several of the cases, many believe that other copycat killers or accomplices may have been involved, especially in the unexplained deaths in Kodaikanal and surrounding areas. Additionally, questions remain about how he obtained cyanide so easily and went unnoticed for nearly a decade.
Several families of the victims still demand answers, and numerous cases linked to the same modus operandi remain legally unresolved. The Kodaikanal Cyanide Case is not just a story of a serial killer—it’s a chilling reminder of how vulnerability, trust, and loopholes in the justice system can be exploited with deadly precision.
