The Phantom Debate
In 1875, a young law student named Thomas Whitmore claimed to have witnessed a ghostly debate taking place inside an abandoned Illinois courthouse. He described two shadowy figures — one unmistakably Abraham Lincoln, the other Stephen Douglas — locked in a fierce exchange, but their voices were low and distorted, as though underwater.
Whitmore, skeptical at first, returned night after night. Each time, the debate continued — never starting, never ending. The content shifted slightly with each visit, eerily aligning with modern issues like civil rights and foreign policy. Lincoln’s figure was calm and towering; Douglas’s flickered like a candle flame.
One night, Whitmore brought friends. They, too, saw the spectral figures, though some claimed Douglas began to fade, while Lincoln grew sharper, clearer. Over time, the courthouse became a hub for local legends. Historians speculated that Lincoln’s passion for justice had tethered part of his spirit to the site of his early oratory battles.
In the 1950s, the building was demolished — but construction workers reported tools disappearing and reappearing days later. A final chilling incident occurred when a worker claimed he heard a voice whisper, “The people still matter,” before being knocked unconscious by a falling beam — with no witnesses, and no structural explanation.
Even today, locals avoid the site, especially during election seasons, when whispers and ghostly shadows are said to emerge, locked in eternal debate.
