Tunnel 33 – Shimla
Tunnel 33 on the Kalka-Shimla railway line is one of the most haunted spots in Himachal Pradesh. The story centers around Colonel Barog, a British engineer tasked with constructing the tunnel.
When the project failed due to a miscalculation, he was publicly humiliated and fined. Heartbroken and disgraced, Barog took his own life inside the tunnel.
Since then, Tunnel 33 has been known for strange occurrences. Many train passengers and railway workers report seeing the spirit of a man believed to be Colonel Barog. Strangely, his ghost is said to be friendly—sometimes appearing and then vanishing with a smile.
However, people have also reported hearing unexplained voices, footsteps, and whispers when walking near the tunnel at night.
In some cases, lights flicker as trains pass through. Others claim to have seen a woman in a black saree walking along the tracks and vanishing into the darkness. Though no harm has come to anyone, the place retains an eerie calm and energy that makes visitors uncomfortable.
Despite being a popular spot for ghost enthusiasts, railway authorities discourage loitering near the tunnel at odd hours due to safety and the area’s haunted reputation.
