YouTube Retires Its “Trending” Page as Algorithmic Discovery Dominates
YouTube has officially announced that its longstanding Trending page and Trending Now section will be permanently removed on July 21, 2025, nearly 10 years since its debut in 2015. Introduced to highlight viral videos, breaking news, and popular music, the Trending page has seen steadily declining engagement as viewers migrate toward personalized content curation through Shorts, the Explore tab, and recommendation algorithms.
In its official blog post, YouTube stated that fewer users now visit Trending, preferring algorithmically generated feeds tailored to individual viewing histories. In response, the platform is ramping up category-based content discovery through YouTube Charts, offering lists like “Trending Music Videos,” “Top Podcast Shows,” and “Movie Trailers,” with more categories expected soon
Creators expressed mixed reactions. Many independent creators felt the Trending page favored established channels and branded entertainment, limiting visibility for smaller voices. YouTube’s shift signals a potential democratization—though it also means losing a centralized space that once conferred widespread exposure and social media share-ability .
Finding trending concepts is now positioned in YouTube Studio’s Inspiration Tab, which provides AI-powered content ideas. Features like “Hype,” which elevates emerging creators, are being promoted alongside official promotion channels to replace the broad visibility once offered by Trending
This change reflects broader platform strategies: YouTube aims to compete more directly with TikTok’s micro‑trend model, where niche content spreads rapidly within interest-based communities. Personalized recommendations, community tabs, Shorts, and Search now dominate discovery, rendering a one-size-fits-all Trending feed largely obsolete
For users, this means no more universal “what everyone’s watching now.” For creators, especially emerging ones, success hinges more on engagement metrics, algorithm favor, and niche relevance. YouTube’s strategic pivot promises a future where trend visibility is highly individualized—and where the old Trending flagpole becomes a relic of early 2010s social media.
