The Bunny Man (Virginia)
The legend of the Bunny Man originated in the 1970s in Fairfax County, Virginia, and has since become a terrifying local folklore. The story revolves around a man dressed in a bunny costume who wields an ax and terrorizes people near an isolated bridge, now called Bunny Man Bridge.
One of the most well-known versions of the tale suggests that the Bunny Man was an escaped mental patient who murdered people in the woods.
According to the legend, he was one of two convicts who escaped while being transported to an asylum. The second escapee was found dead, hanging from the bridge, with his stomach slashed open. The surviving convict then supposedly became the Bunny Man, attacking anyone who ventured near the bridge.
Though this story is largely fictional, real reports from 1970 describe a man in a white suit and bunny ears threatening people with an ax. He was never caught, and no murders were linked to him. Despite the lack of evidence, the legend has persisted, and Bunny Man Bridge remains a popular site for ghost hunters and thrill-seekers.
Many locals warn against visiting the bridge at night, as it is believed to be haunted. Some claim to hear whispers, see shadowy figures, or even spot the ghostly apparition of the Bunny Man himself. The urban legend has inspired horror movies and haunted attractions, making it one of Virginia’s most infamous spooky tales.
