The Cursed City of Fatehpur Sikri – The Ghost Town
Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located near Agra, is known for its architectural splendor. Built by Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century, it was intended to be the grand capital of the Mughal Empire.
However, after only 14 years, it was mysteriously abandoned. Official accounts cite water scarcity as the reason, but locals and folklore suggest a darker explanation involving curses and paranormal happenings.
One of the popular legends revolves around Sheikh Salim Chishti, a revered Sufi saint. It’s said that Akbar built the city to honor Chishti after he predicted the birth of Akbar’s heir.
However, after the city’s completion, many claim that Akbar’s descendants disrespected the saint’s wishes and as a result, Chishti’s curse fell upon the city. Since then, Fatehpur Sikri is believed to be cursed, causing its sudden desertion.
Visitors to the now-empty palaces and courtyards often describe an unsettling silence, punctuated by inexplicable sounds—whispers, footsteps, or the feeling of being watched. Some believe the spirits of those who once inhabited the city still linger, tied to the unfinished fate of this ghost town.
