The Midnight Train
Every April 15th, a phantom funeral train is said to travel the tracks between Washington D.C. and Springfield, Illinois — retracing the exact route that carried Abraham Lincoln’s body after his assassination. Locals along the line speak of a ghostly whistle that echoes in the night, followed by a gust of cold air.
In 1905, a railway signalman named Horace Greaves reported the train stopping at a small rural station. He described spectral soldiers in Union uniforms, standing at attention beside a black-draped engine. Inside the hearse car, Lincoln’s coffin glowed faintly, as though lit from within.
Greaves tried to approach, but his body froze in place. The train vanished without sound, leaving no tracks on the freshly fallen snow. Decades later, another sighting occurred in Pennsylvania. A young couple driving home late at night claimed the temperature dropped suddenly as a train passed through a field — with no tracks anywhere nearby.
Paranormal investigators have tried to capture the phenomenon, but their equipment always fails around midnight on April 15th. Photos blur, batteries die, and time seems to slow. One investigator described hearing a soft, mournful tune — a funeral dirge — played on an invisible band.
