Book Summary

They were among the most frightening of early secret societies

A secretive group feared and hated by Roman citizens, many called for their extermination while others feared their revenge.

Neighbors worried these members would corrupt their children with dangerous ideas. Some were fascinated by tales of their depravity. Rumors claimed they were cannibals and engaged in orgies, incest, and bizarre rituals, identifying each other with a symbol of torture. Stories of their practices horrified the Romans, who valued nobility.

Politicians demanded the sect’s elimination, while citizens shared and embellished these tales, creating a consensus that the group, Christians, must be stopped. These tales, viewed now as propaganda, were spread to prevent people from joining Christians and to justify harsh treatments.

However, the Roman Senate was more concerned with Christians’ refusal to worship the emperor, which they saw as disloyalty. The public’s scandalous stories, based on Christians’ secretive practices, fed this narrative.

Christians’ secrecy, rituals involving symbolic flesh and blood consumption, rescuing abandoned infants, and referring to each other as “brother” and “sister” led to misconceptions.

The cross, a symbol of their faith, was seen as a threat. These misunderstandings led to widespread fear and suspicion, illustrating how secret societies are often met with mistrust and hostility.

Today, secret societies still provoke fascination and fear, their true nature often obscured by conspiracy theories. Despite technological advances, the basic human response to secrecy and perceived threats remains unchanged.

The buried talent is the sunken rock on which most lives strike and founder. Frederick William Faber
