The Near-Death Experience (NDE) Study
Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) occur when individuals who are clinically dead or close to death report extraordinary experiences, such as traveling through tunnels of light, meeting deceased loved ones, or experiencing a life review.
Scientists have studied NDEs to determine whether they provide evidence for an afterlife or are simply the result of brain activity during trauma.
One experiment involved placing visual targets on high shelves in hospital emergency rooms, only visible from above. The idea was that patients experiencing NDEs might perceive these targets if their consciousness truly left their bodies. While some patients reported classic NDE elements, none were able to describe the hidden targets.
The study suggested that NDEs might be the result of brain activity, particularly in the temporal lobe, rather than proof of life after death. However, the debate continues, as some cases remain unexplained.
