In 1912, a hidden room was discovered beneath the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois — where Abraham Lincoln once served. Inside were hundreds of books, manuscripts, and a worn desk. The eerie part? Many books were unknown to historians, and some appeared to have been written after Lincoln’s death — in his handwriting.
The room was sealed off and largely forgotten until a paranormal researcher named Elsie Monroe gained access in the 1970s. She claimed to hear scratching sounds and soft murmurs, as though someone were still writing. Her team set up cameras and audio recorders. Over three nights, they captured sounds of pages turning and a deep voice softly speaking phrases like “liberty yet unfulfilled.”
They also found a new manuscript titled A Nation Still Divided, written in a style identical to Lincoln’s known writings — but referencing events long after 1865. The book vanished soon after Elsie went public.
Some believe this hidden library is a spiritual anchor — a place where Lincoln’s ghost continues to write, reflecting on the future of the republic. Staff who’ve entered since have reported shadowy figures and an overwhelming sense of sorrow and duty.
