The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) Program
Established in 1979 by Dr. Robert G. Jahn, the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program aimed to explore interactions between human consciousness and physical devices. Over nearly three decades until its closure in 2007, PEAR conducted extensive experiments focusing on psychokinesis (PK) and remote viewing.
A central aspect of PEAR’s research involved the use of Random Event Generators (REGs), devices designed to produce sequences of numbers that are statistically random.
Participants, referred to as “operators,” were tasked with attempting to influence the output of these REGs through intention alone, aiming to produce results that deviated from chance expectations. Over millions of trials, PEAR reported small but statistically significant effects suggesting that human consciousness could exert an influence on these devices.
Additionally, PEAR explored “remote perception,” where individuals attempted to describe or perceive information about distant or unseen targets without any sensory input. The results indicated some level of accuracy above chance, though the effects were modest.
Despite intriguing findings, PEAR faced significant criticism due to methodological issues, concerns about reproducibility, and accusations of data selection biases. Independent replication attempts often failed to achieve similar outcomes. The lab’s association with parapsychology led to strained relations with Princeton University, and it ultimately closed in 2007. The legacy of PEAR remains controversial, illustrating the challenges of studying consciousness and its potential influence on physical systems.
